The Stray Family

We have 5 indoor cats (I know it's way too many) and 3 that have "adopted" us that live outside. I have talked on several occasions about the 3 cats we refer to as "The Stray Family". There is Blacky who is the Dad, Betty (Laura calls her "whoa Black Betty Bamalam" after the song by the same title) who is the Mom and then the baby who we call Billy Joe. When I pull in at night the three of them are on our front steps waiting for me to feed them. Earlier this spring Blacky had a couple pretty bad wounds on his legs and I started feeding him moist cat food (along with dry cat food) to help those wounds heal. It worked great, but now I am obligated to feed them every night. Here are some pictures from this evening. I am sorry for some of them being blurry, but they just didn't want to sit still for pictures.

Blacky is the blur on the left and the one telling me "kiss my ass" is Billy Joe. I tried so hard to get his picture and he turned around and just sat there for a second. Damn teenagers.
Here is Blacky (left) and Billy Joe with the treats bag. I had already fed them when I decided to take some pictures. So I had to pull out the treats. I laid the bag on the ground and Blacky and Billy Joe proceeded to try to get the treats out themselves.

Here Blacky has successfully got the bag of treats up and is sticking his whole face in trying to get a treat.

Here is Betty, aka Momma. I am so used to calling her Momma that I usually just call her that. She has moved in under our front steps and I do believe she has had some more kittens. I am anxious to see the new babies.

Here is Blacky with our little dog statue. They have been so rough on this statue. One day we came home and found it in the neighbors yard. It used to have a welcome sign that hung from it's mouth, but they have torn it up completely.

Here is Betty (left) and Billy Joe. Billy Joe is playing with Betty's tail. Billy Joe never sits still and is always moving. He also loves the little pumpkin lights. We have come home to find a few of them knocked over. He shows very little respect for our items.

Last but not least: here is a picture of Ben. I read through some of my posts from April when he was lost for a week. Made me so thankful that he is home. Here is how we spend most of our evenings. He sleeps all day and when I get home he comes out for some loving. Do you notice the similarities between Ben and Blacky? Ben's father is Blacky. 5 years ago I managed to catch this cutie. I just love this little guy so much.

I miss your feline family. We have a feral feline here, too. Allan has dubbed her (we think it's "her") "Smokey" because she is a pretty little grey cat, and also because this is "Smokey Territory." Did you know that near here is where the real Smokey the Bear was found? Bit o' history! She is now letting me pet her and feed her yesterday, so I'm becoming accepted.

In your previous post you mentioned the coke/water thing, and I know exactly what you mean. I opened a soft drink a couple days ago, and I couldn't drink it after a few sips. Water is good, isn't it? And you're right, it does help with the weight loss. Keep up the good work. I'm proud of you.

Hey! We have 5 inside kitties too. Our house used to be a magnet for stray cats but I've noticed that. over the years, that has ceased to be true. Perhaps the powers that be know I have all the "tending to" I can handle right now with our 7 pets and 2 wild children. :)

I'm glad your strays have you to take care of them. :)

lynilu--you'll have to take a picture of Smokey to show all of us

onecrazylady--yes they are very loved and they surely know it

isabel--thanks for the compliment on the new look. i love it

casey--i just can't stand when it's really hot or cold outside and they are out there. we may have to move them into the garage this winter

What a beautiful furry family you have! Ha, I love that dog statue. Do you put a Santa hat on it in winter? Nice to see happy animals.

Sandra--you know us too well. Of course we put a santa hat on the dog during x-mas time. One year I even found some mini-lights to go around the hat. It was so cute.

Low cost spay and neuter clinics happen in Kansas City all the time, please don't let your outdoor kitties have any more kittens - Please! The shelters overflow with kitties like these every day. I think you and Laura must be great people, but please, please spay and neuter. I volunteer at Wayside and the amount of kitties who are perfectly wonderful but homeless would break your heart. Please! Call these folks -
Spay & Neuter Kansas City Thanks for considering this.

anonymous--thank you so much for that number. we have been searching for a place that could "fix" them for a small amount of money. it's just been recently that "mama" and the baby will let me near them. I feel bad that we have not taken Blacky anywhwere because he will let us pick him up. Thanks again for the phone number. I will be calling them first thing tomorrow morning. I do feel that we need to get this done so there aren't so many strays in our neighborhood.

We seem to be a magnet for strays too. However, I do believe that the coyotes are keeping the numbers down now. But, we do our best to trap them, get them spayed/neutered and then release them again. The strays around here are feral, so they don't want to be picked up, but they do want to be fed. A few of my indoor kitties have come from the litters - and actually, that's how we caught the moms -- but taking the babies, putting them in a cage --- hence they cry -- and mom comes in to get them. You gotta be fast to shut the door though! I love having them around, but too many babies isn't good. Great pics!

wendy--your house sounds a lot like hours, except the coyotes. we are going to be getting them fixed real soon. already made the call to the place anonymous left.we missed their call, but said they will call us back on monday. they won't be happy, but it will prevent unwanted babies.
